UPC Codes for Music, Explained for Indian Artists (2026)

A UPC (Universal Product Code) is the unique number that identifies a music release as a whole — a single, EP, or album. It's the release-level equivalent of a barcode on a product, and platforms and stores use it to track sales and streams of that release. Every release you put out needs one, and your distributor assigns it for free.

UPC vs ISRC: the key difference

This is the most common confusion, so here it is plainly:

ISRCUPC
IdentifiesOne recording (a single track)One release (single, EP, or album)
How manyOne per trackOne per release
Example useTracking plays of a songTracking sales of the whole release

So a 10-track album has one UPC (for the album) and ten ISRCs (one per track). For a deeper look at the track-level code, see ISRC codes in India.

How to get a UPC in India

The easy way: your distributor assigns a valid UPC automatically and for free when you create a release. For nearly every independent artist, that's all you need. Labels that want to manage their own UPCs in bulk can buy them from GS1 India (the official barcode body), but that's rarely necessary for individual artists.

Do you ever need to buy your own UPC?

Almost never as an indie artist. Buying UPCs only makes sense for labels managing large catalogs who want consistent ownership of their codes. If you're releasing your own music, let your distributor handle it — and keep the same UPC if you ever switch distributors, so your release history stays intact. New to all this? Frequently asked questions

What is a UPC code in music?

A UPC (Universal Product Code) is the unique number that identifies a music release — a single, EP, or album — as a whole. Platforms use it to track sales and streams of that release.

What's the difference between a UPC and an ISRC?

A UPC identifies a whole release; an ISRC identifies a single recording (track). A 10-track album has one UPC and ten ISRCs. You need both, and your distributor provides both.

How do I get a UPC code for my music in India?

Your distributor assigns one automatically and for free when you create a release. For most independent artists that's all you need; labels can buy UPCs from GS1 India for bulk management.

Is a UPC code free?

Yes, when it's assigned by your distributor as part of creating a release. Buying your own UPCs from GS1 involves a fee and is generally only worth it for labels.

How many UPCs do I need for an album?

One UPC for the album as a whole, plus one ISRC for each track on it. A single also gets one UPC and one ISRC.

Do I keep my UPC if I switch distributors?

Yes. Like the ISRC, the UPC belongs to the release, so keep it when you migrate so your release history and stream counts stay intact.
